Just lost the sound on my XP system yesterday and this error popped up:

There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, Go to Control Panel and Other Hardware

To solve it, I went into went Run > services.msc and navigated down to Windows Audio and clicked Start. Might help somebody else out there.
